Matt Wallis' career started in 1983 in recording studios in London, working with artists such as: Whodini, Trio, Aswad, Baron Rojo, Bronski Beat, The Communards, Blancmange and The Cocteau Twins.

In 1988 Matt formed the band Babayaga with Hamish MacColl (brother of Kirsty MacColl) and signed to the legendary Fly Records (home of T-Rex, Procol Harum and The Move). Babayaga were the first signing to the newly revived Fly label but the band were dropped after only one single. Hamish went on to write the song The Hardest Word with Kirsty for her 1991 album Electric Landlady and Matt moved in to music journalism.

He joined music magazine International Musician & Recording World as a writer and interviewed musicians including; Sinéad O'Connor, The Fall, The Mission, The Wonder Stuff, The Pet Shop Boys, and The Soup Dragons. Matt became the title's editor In 1990, leaving in '91 to launch the UK version of the successful Australian metal music magazine Hot Metal.

Becoming a freelance journalist in 1996 Matt regularly wrote for popular UK music and teen magazines including; NME, Melody Maker, Smash Hits, Just Seventeen, Mizz, More, Bliss, Sugar, and Dolly -contributing real-life stories, interviews, reviews and advice.

Matt continues to freelance today and is currently writing a book about the history of punk (due to be published Nov. 2020)
